Michael P. LeBurkien, Rabbi Emeritus

Rabbi LeBurkien was the spiritual leader of our congregation from 1970 - 1976.  He returned to HCRJ's pulpit in the summer of 1998 with the feeling of coming home.

Some of the things that kept him busy during the period he was away from the pulpit were: completing law school, working as Assistant DA for Brazoria County, as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas in environmental law, and founding the Juvenile section of the State Bar of Texas, not to mention the three children, Barbara, David, and Jonathan,  that he and his wife, Dr. Blossom Zanger, raised to be responsible adults.

While all these things may not be directly related to the business of being on the pulpit, Rabbi LeBurkien said, "practicing law was a working ministry."  The skills necessary to do these jobs well are the ability to listen, a caring attitude, and the ability and willingness to help.  All his work has required him to be a compassionate, caring, responsible individual.

The Rabbi is excited about working with the Congregation to get our message out to the Jewish Community in a positive way.   HCRJ offers a unique and vital way of experiencing our Judaism, one that offers a spiritual, comprehensible, and interesting way to express our faith.

The Religious School is a top priority with the Rabbi.  He, along with the Religious School Committee, have coordinated a bright and interesting school facility.  Rabbi LeBurkien serves as a resource for our professional teachers and our school administrator, helping them to make choices in the curriculum that will capture the imaginations of our children.

Rabbi LeBurkien's interests when away from the pulpit include his family, European civilization, international relations, antiques, and impressionist art
